Damaraland

Exotic places like Mikberg, or “Aim Mountain” and Divorce Pass are also to be found in Southern Damaraland.  Both these places have immense value as hiking spots, even if only for a day or two.

Damaraland is a special place, with special features.  Game is around, so keep a sharp look out.  Smaller wildlife, like chameleons and snakes are also around. Contact us to arrange your Namibia safari. Visit our home page for further information.

Brandberg Damaraland

Following the two track road from the Quantagab River in a southerly direction, you will eventually drive down to the Ugab River, via Divorce pass.  The pass is aptly named, because it is relatively steep, and has the potential to cause friction between couples when driving down there.  To hike in the area is even more special.  There are long rocky ridges with beautiful valleys between them.  One can easily go for a full day’s hike in a circular route.  Walking west from your vehicle you will find it difficult, as the ridges are quite steep, and the valleys small, so as soon as you are down one ridge you have to start climbing the next one.  The ridges is very steep as well, so it more of a rock climbing, without equipment, than a hike on specific trails.  No equipment is needed, but logical thinking will get you down and up every single time.  One can then turn south and follow one of these valleys as it drop down into the Ugab River.  Be sure to keep a sharp look out, because the view from the top over the Ugab valley, with the Brandberg in the background, is worth the hike.  To get back to your car, follow the Ugab River in an Easterly direction, and climb up Divorce pass, and you will have finished a circular route of roughly 15 to 18 kilometres.  This area is not visited a lot by other people, as it is off the beaten track, so be sure to take enough water and food for your hike.

Mikberg is a mountain that lies on the North bank of the Huab River.  Driving past Hyena’s den the road will lead you to Twyfelfontein eventually.  Before you reach the Huab River you will be able to identify Mikberg by its distinct shape.  It has a deep “V” in the middle of the mountain, hence the name.  One has to take everything you are going to need along, water, food and camping gear, as there is absolutely nothing available in the area.  Be sure to reach the foot of the mountain late afternoon, so that you have time to prepare your kit and food.  This will ensure that you can start climbing the mountain early the next morning.  This is vital, as the sun is up early and it will become hot from 10:00 when climbing.  It is possible to reach the summit anywhere from 15:00 onwards, so look for a suitable campsite, and set up camp.  There is no shade on top, so either make a shade by using space blankets over your hiking poles, or something else.  It is best to stay on the summit for that evening, otherwise if you start descending that same day, nightfall will find you stranded halfway down the mountain.  There is no communication with the world, so be absolutely sure you are self sustained for at least 5 days.  It is vital that you have enough water for this number of days.
