Swakopmund Namibia

Located on the west coast of Namibia, between the edge of The Namib Desert and the Atlantic ocean is the small town of Swakopmund. This town is best when explored on foot, see our Swakopmund half day trail, where you will hear some fascinating stories relating to the history of this German settlement.

The name Swakopmund is derived from mund, meaning mouth, and Swakop, being the river at which it is at the end of. There are quite a few German buildings remaining around the town, although development is graduallly swallowing these up, the town is expanding rapidly, and businesses are growing at the same time. Some things to do while in Swakopmund would be to visit the snake park, which is located in the main street, and houses quite a variety of indigenous species. There is also a small museum housing some interesting artefacts from the history of the town. Although it lies on the banks of the Swakop river, it is rare to actually find water on the surface of this river, as with most rivers in Namibia, it is an ephemeral river, and water will only be seen on the surface during years of exceptional rainfall.

Swakopmund has a railway station, and the passenger train can be utilised to travel to the capital Windhoek as well as a number of places in between, although it shouldn't be considered if one is in a hurry, as it takes around 12 hours to cover the 350 km distance.

There is plenty of accommodation in and around the town that would suit most budgets, although at peak season, i.e. Christmas and Easter, this is very hard to find and is also rather more expensive at those times of the year. Something very worthwhile doing, is taking a trip to the nearby town of Walvis Bay, where you are able to go on a boat trip on the Walvis Bay lagoon. During this trip, it is possible to see dolphins, turtles, sunfish known as Mola-Mola, seals and a myriad birdlife. There is also an opportunity to visit Sandwich Harbour by 4 x 4 vehicle, which makes for a very interesting outing. Most tours of Namibia will include a visit to this town, and it is therefore very much geared towards the tourist trade, there are plenty of restaurants, bars and souvenir shops for the serious drinkers and those after some retail therapy. Most mornings will find Swakopmund covered in a dense mist, which may or may not dissipate during the day. Some people find this quite pleasant, while others find it quite depressing. Cape Cross seal colony is not far from the town, also a Skeleton Coast trip is available to include visits to Cape Cross as well as The Messum Crater, a fascinating old volcano located just slightly inland. Fishing is a popular sport that can readily be pursued from here, you will be able to fish from a boat or from the shore, there are some fine fish to be found here. It's also possible to visit Spitskoppe, known as the Namibian Matterhorn, a granite inselberg approximately 120 km's from the coast, it is a spectacular sight and there are ancient bushman paintings to be forund there if you know where to look.
