The Wild at Heart tour to Sandwich Harbour begins when you are collected at the Coffee Shoppe
near the Lagoon in Walvis Bay. At 09:00 the tour starts officially. After a brief introduction by your guide, your
adventure will start.
Itinerary
Driving past the salt mine outside Walvis Bay we head for the beach. The windswept shores and
crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean will keep you fascinated as your guide explains the details surrounding the
weather systems of the area.
Along the way we explore the hummocks to see if we can spot some wildlife in the form of Black Backed Jackal, Cape Fox or even some Pale Chanting Goshawks.
After entering the Namib Naukluft Park, your guide will take you over some large saltpans where
the critically endangered Damara Tern can be found. As we head south towards Sandwich Harbour, you will see the change in the environment. Towering sand dunes sculpted by the wind is becoming progressively more, until we reach Sandwich
Harbour. Safety being of utmost importance, your guide will take you on adventurous ride to give you some of the
best views in the world. Standing on top of these huge sand dunes overlooking Sandwich harbour is truly very
special. Watching White Pelicans as the use the updraft of the dune, flying past you and to feel the sand under your feet is something you will not forget.
If time allows a visit to the main Sandwich lagoon will be arranged. Over 40 000 birds with more
than 34 different species can be observed on this body of water. Taking a short walk around the lagoon can lead you
to seeing dolphins, seals and even whales if lucky.
Lunch is another unforgettable memory. In the middle of this wilderness your guide will provide
you with fresh bread, finger licking snacks of a wide variety and some chilled drinks. After lunch we drive back
towards Walvis Bay on some more adventurous roads. In this area you might be able to see Springbuck or even Ostrich. Brown Hyena dens have also been
spotted, so these lovely animals are present as well.
Driving through the Kuiseb Delta on our way back, your guide will enlighten you with tales about
the Topnaar people of the Kuiseb. Descendants of the !Khoi, this local tribe utilises the !Nara fruit in several
ways to sustain their livelihood and culture.
