The Spitskoppe, Namibia.

The Spitskoppe is one of Namibia’s best known mountain ranges. It is breathtakingly beautiful,
and a very special place to visit.
Itinerary
You will be collected at your hotel at 08:00. The Spitskoppe
mountain range is roughly about 120 kilometres from Swakopmund. Most of the time we will travel on the tarmac road
to Usakos and about 30 Kilometres from Usakos we turn north towards the Spitskoppe. A quick stop will be made at
the local gem suppliers that have based themselves at this turn off. It will also serve as a break to stretch your
legs a bit.
As we approach the Spitskoppe you will clearly see that it almost looks like it rises straight
from the plains it sits on. The Spitskoppe is a granite inselberg. In ages gone by magma have pushed through the
earths crust, only to be eroded away again, but granite is very hard and resists erosion stubbornly, and thus the
Spitskoppe was formed.
The settlement at the base of the Spitskoppe is inhabited by local Damara people. They have formed a conservancy
that is there to protect and generate funds from this unique feature.
Our first official stop, after several photo stops, will be little Bushmen’s paradise. On this
overhanging rock are a huge number of Bushmen paintings. After some explaining from your guide about this specific
set of paintings, we head to Bushmen’s Paradise. To reach these Bushmen paintings some climbing has to be done. We
climb up a steep rock face, assisted by a chain. Once on top the views from here are really nice. After catching
our breaths your guide will lead you to the Bushmen paintings. They are well hidden in a lovely valley with a huge
variety of trees and plants. To hear the chirping of the birds and feel the sun on your face, one can understand
why the little yellow people chose this place for their rock art.
Once down, your guide will drive to a lovely overhanging rock that provided shade. Here lunch
will be set up. Lunch will be an array of cold meats and cheeses with some fresh salads. Freshly baked bread and
rolls accompany this. Sparkling wine and fruit juice will also be available for the thirsty traveller.
After lunch your guide will take you on a round about trip through the area, and there will be
ample opportunities for photographs as we drive. Interesting plants like the butter tree and the Euphorbia species
will be pointed out to you. The Herero Chat is a bird that is endemic to this area, and hopefully we might be able
to spot one or two.
We leave this majestic mountain range and head back to Swakopmund again. We aim to arrive back
in Swakopmund at about 17:00.
