AdventureBrandberg is the highest mountain in Namibia. Konigstein, the highest peak, is 2573 meter above sea level. For ages, the Brandberg was home to the San people. As hunter-gatherers, they found shelter, food and water in the hidden folds of the Brandberg. They also left a legacy of paintings. It is estimated that there are over 30 000 of these in and around the Brandberg. To find and marvel at these very old paintings is a joy for the human soul. Some faint and dull, others so vivid and rich in colour, they look like they were painted yesterday. All of this will be discovered on this Bushmen Painting Exploration Safari.
Itinerary
Day 1
Upon your arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, you will be met by your guide. Our journey takes us through the capital of Namibia, Windhoek.
The next village is Okahandja, and from there we head to Brandberg. By late afternoon we will have arrived at the foot of the Brandberg, inside the Hungorob Gorge. We will set up camp here, and prepare our hiking equipment and food for the next four days. Dinner will be a delightful affair, cooked over an open fire.
Day 2
Walking into the Hungorob Gorge, we make our way over boulders and rocks to the Springbok Water Fountain. The fountain will be reached by about 11:00. After filling our water containers, we head to a place known as the "stone circle" camp. After pitching camp, we will walk down to the fountain and explore the area for Bushmen paintings.
Camp: Stone Circle Camp
Day 3
After breakfast, we head down to the Lower Accumulation. These paintings are roughly on the 900 meter contour line. In this region, there are about seven recorded sites with numerous pictures depicting the lifestyle of the San people.
Lunch will be had in the shade of one of the immense granite boulders that fill the valley. The rest of the afternoon will also be spent exploring the area until we head back to camp.
Camp: Stone Circle Camp.
Day 4
After Breakfast, we head upwards into the Hungorob Gorge. Our aim is to reach the ‘waterfall shelter'. We will make camp east of this shelter on a nice small open plain. On the way we will stop one more time at a strong fountain and fill up all our available water containers. At the waterfall shelter, we will have a look at the Bushmen paintings present, before heading to camp.
Camp: Above the waterfall shelter.
Day 5
Today we will walk to Snake Rock, a very nice and well preserved painting with a huge variety of colours. Some time will be spent here, as it is a truly magnificent site to behold. After lunch we head back to our camp, and pack our bags. Heading down into the gorge again, we aim for the Stone Circle Camp. It is a relatively long walk, but luckily most of it is downhill.
Camp: Stone Circle Camp
Day 6
After breakfast, we carry on with the Hungorob Gorge up to where the vehicle is standing. The time has now come to say goodbye to the highest mountain in Namibia. We will start making our way back to Windhoek, and aim to reach the airport in time for your flight home.
