Climbing the Brandberg does not only provide for the highest view in Namibia, but also the most spectacular, ancient rock art.
Itinerary
Day 1
You will be collected from the Hosea Kutako International airport upon your arrival. Driving through Windhoek we will have the change for last minute shopping if so desired. Heading west we pass the small town of Omaruru, where we will have lunch.
The afternoon will see us end up at the foot of the Hungorob valley.
During this time you will be able to finally prepare and inspect your hiking equipment. Following the valley we start the ascent of the highest mountain in Namibia. We will walk until last light, before choosing a campsite for the evening.
Dinner will be made on an open fire, under the starry skies of Namibia.
Day 2
After a quick breakfast the climb will start in all earnest. Following the valley as it slowly winds it way up to the top, we will have rest stops as required. Our first water stop will be at Springbok water. After filling our water bottles and having a look at the Bushmen paintings present there, we head higher into the mountain. The trail now hugs the South side of the valley as we steadily climb. Lunch will be had as soon as we enter the plateau. After a bit of a rest after lunch we will have a more leisurely walk to our camp for the night. At "Wasserfall rock" we will fill up the water bottles again. More Bushmen paintings can be viewed here.
We now make our way to "Snake Rock" and will also camp in the vicinity. Snake Rock is one of the best Bushmen Painting sights in the Brandberg.
Camp will be about 2145 meters above sea level. The night skies at this height are indescribable. One must see to believe.
Day 3
After breakfast we follow the valley until we can see the highest point in Namibia, Konigstein. At around 11:00 we will be on top of the highest point in Namibia. You can then sign the book that is kept there to have proof that you were there. The view from the top is stunning to say the least. The Spitskoppe and Erongo mountain ranges can be seen. The plains stretching out below you are never ending. After all of this has been memorised we head back down again. After spending some time on the summit, we start the decent to Snake Rock. After a rest break, we start the descent in all earnest. Passing the "Wasserfall" paintings, we head for Bushmen fountain.
Walking down is not quite so hard as uphill, but by this time we will be tired and our leg muscles will be taking most of the grunt.
We will arrive at Bushmen Fountain anytime from 15:30, and take a well deserved rest there. We then head out to the "Stone Circle" camp, which will be our base for the evening.
Around a campfire, the day will be discussed in minute detail, as we sip some hot tea or coffee.
Day 4
Our last breakfast will consist of coffee and muesli. We then head down the Hungorob Gorge to our vehicle. It will take us roughly 3 hours to complete the last leg of our journey. After resting a bit, we will hit the road again, and it will be a strange feeling to drive in a vehicle again. This time the International Airport will be our destination.
We drive past the Spitskoppe for a last look at one of Namibia's most famous mountain range. A lunch stop will be had at Karibib and then we carry on towards Windhoek
You will be taken to the International Airport for your departure.
A quick week it would seem, but you will always have the visions of wide open spaces and the highest mountain in Namibia in your heart and mind.
