Sandwich Harbour, or Sandwich Harbor.

Sandwich Harbour, or Sandwich Harbor, is about 55 kilometres South of Walvis Bay.

In order to reach this area, you will have to use a 4x4 vehicle. The sand is very heavy and the going gets really tough at some places.

The area roughly represents three different ecosystems. The dune belt area which represents the biggest percentage. These sand dunes encroach on the lagoon, and just before reaching the lagoon, these dunes make a spectacular drop into the Atlantic Ocean. One can only pass this area during low tide. The freshwater seepage that takes place in the North lagoon is another ecosystem. Here you will find a lot of freshwater birds like ducks and teals. The last ecosystem represented is the main lagoon, or marine lagoon.

Sandwich harbour is important for several reasons, but the two main reasons are; it is a breeding place for fish and it is a very important wetland for birdlife in the area. There can be up to 200 000 birds present at one specific time. The number of species present can easily reach into the 100 mark.

Fish like Kob travel thousands of kilometres every year down the Namibian coast to come and spawn in Sandwich harbour. Sandwich is a natural bay where the eggs of fish are relatively safe from other predators. The fry, or small fish, also have a better chance of survival and a chance to grow before they leave for the open ocean. The reason for this higher rate of survival is due to the fact that the lagoon is a calm body of water. Warmed by the sun, it supports and sustains a lot of phytoplankton and other invertebrates. This in turn ensures that the lagoon have a large and varied concentration of fish.

Birdlife in the marine lagoon is abundant, with several different species present. Water birds are a term loosely used to cover all shore birds. These are plovers, sandpipers, ducks, gulls and terns. Also very noticeable in the Sandwich lagoon are the huge number of White Pelicans and Greater and Lesser Flamingos.
Mammals like the elusive Brown Hyena, Black Backed jackal, Springbuck and Cape Fur Seals are also present in the area. Although seen much less than the bigger animals, insects like Chameleons, Horned Adders, Gecko’s of different species and the occasional Side Winder Adder, are present in the dunes just towards the East of the main Sandwich harbour lagoon.
