Waterberg Plateau

Due to the high elevation of the Waterberg plateau, the area receives considerably more rain than the surrounding areas. Thus, the plateau harbours the same vegetation patterns as the Kalahari woodland, hundreds of kilometres away. Animals like the elusive black rhino, the aggressive Cape buffalo, the scarce roan and rarely-seen sable antelope can be seen.

Day 1.  Windhoek - Waterberg (300 Km)

Your epic Namibian adventure begins when you land at Hosea Kutako International Airport. From here, we drive through the capital of Namibia, the bustling city of Windhoek. The quaint little town of Okahandja is the last civilization you will see for a while as we travel on to the Waterberg Plateau Park, our chosen campsite for the evening. This picturesque setting is the ideal way to start our hike and a memorable start to your true Namibian adventure. From this high vantage point, you can see the magnificent Namibian landscape as it stretches beyond sight to the south and to the east.

Day 2 - 4. Wilderness Walking Trail (Guided/Unguided)

Today, we start the hike through the Waterberg Wilderness. We depart around 09h00 from the Onjoka gate and make our way to the plateau. The plateau is 20 kilometers wide and 50 kilometer long. This ‘table top'-like mountain is mainly porous sandstone. The area that we cover in our walk does not support much surface water, as the water drains through the sandstone and trickles out at the foot of the mountain; even so, the vegetation is diverse and very green. Woodland and savannah are the main types of biomes found in this area. For a little bit of a history lesson, it is interesting to note that this area became the property of the Government in 1972 and the Department of Nature Conservation was placed in charge of the whole area.

The plateau is a natural pen for game. Once they reach the top of the plateau, there is very little chance for escape. For this reason, the park was chosen as an ideal arena in which to re-introduce rare game species like the sable and the black rhino. It is also for this reason that we adhere strictly to rule number two of Walking in Africa: "When in Africa, walk with your eyes open!" The chances of encountering black rhino are very good. Plenty of other game will also be seen.

Our camps are very basic as we need to carry all of our own supplies. To sit in the middle of a wilderness area with the nightlife around you is one of the most satisfying experiences in life. Enjoy the moment while it lasts.

Day 5.  Waterberg - Okaukuejo (271 Km)

We leave the Waterberg Plateau for another flagship of Namibian Conservation, the Etosha National Park.  In 2007, this park marked its 100th year of existence. Upon entering this park, the abundance of wildlife is sure to astound and amaze you. Everywhere you look, there is bound to be life, be it bird, mammal or plant; the wonders never cease!  The nights in Etosha are also truly special and something to experience for oneself. The floodlit waterhole will surely keep you entertained for hours on end. Sit down, stretch your legs, and become one with the movement and life around you.

Day 6. Okaukuejo (100 Km)

Today is spent visiting different waterholes within the area. Our quest is to see as many different species as is humanly possible. Lion, leopard, black rhino and giraffe are but a few of the species we are almost guaranteed to see.

Your last night in Etosha is spent at Okaukuejo again, relaxing after the day's almost unbearable heat.

Day 7.  Okaukuejo - Windhoek  (485 Km)

We leave relatively early for Windhoek. On our way to the International Airport, we stop at the little town of Okahandja to marvel at the local wood craft center. Here, you can spend some time buying local crafts for your loved ones back home - the perfect souvenir.

Your epic Namibian adventure draws to a close. But we know in our hearts that the sights and sounds you have experienced here will linger on in your memory for an eternity.

Thanks for visiting Namibia. Be sure to come back soon!
